1. Planning permission is NOT needed

As of April 2012 solar PV installations on commercial and industrial premises are usually classed as permitted development, so no additional planning permission is usually required for any size of roof mounted installation (unless the building is listed).

2. 10kW 3 phase installations automatically have permission to connect to the grid

On 3 phase installations we can install up to 10kW under G83 regulations without needing to get any advance permission from YEDL, which combined with the permitted development regulations means we can usually install a 10kW 3 phase solar PV system within days of the contract being signed if required.

3. Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of band D or higher is usually needed

As of 1st April 2012, unless your building is something like an unheated barn or unheated warehouse, it needs to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of band D or higher in order to claim the higher Feed In Tariff (FIT) rates. Buildings that can't achieve a band D EPC rating will only be eligible for FIT payments at the lower 9p rate.

The solar PV installation does count towards the buildings EPC rating, and larger PV systems can cause the EPC band to improve by an entire band or more. Leeds Solar will arrange for an EPC to be produced as part of the installation process, and can produce a package of additional energy saving measures to assist the building to achieve band D if needed.
